found strange Z version

Post by CHYROS » 2006-01-25, 16:27

Hi all, I'm grateful to see that there's actually a Z community! A few days ago, I grabbed a strange version of Z from the internet (I think I should be allowed to do that; I bought the game twice). Here are some of the more notable discrepancies:
-Chilly Willy and Heavy Metal were swapped
-Chilly Willy lets you start with a Heavy, even though there is not 4* vehicle factory in it
-Heavy Metal begins with a huge rock wall around your entire base and the little passage to the bottom right territory doesn't exist
-Mayhem and Bridge Game are swapped

In addition, in almost all levels past level 10, the starting units are different, factories are different and the hardware is sometimes different, too. It is a DOS version, because I can't get Z95 to work.

Anybody else has this version and/or knows how to change the level names? I've found out you can paste level contents across versions, but this doesn't change the level order... It's just so damn irritating to go to Mayhem after Car Park, I hate that!

unlikely. Maybe it's a very early version.

I think you played Z 1-20 level in Z:Addon edition. I noticed several bad changes in levels in that addon
Z and only Z1

Didn't seem to be anything added... Would fit TBB to make an addon that adds nothing though, considering they are letting their past games rot in the crypts of abandonware...

Well, at least I found a way to "restore" the game; I copied my Z95 LEVELS.DAT over the strange version's, and copied the level content of the first twenty levels, too. The levels and level names seem to be identical to the Z95 ones now. The names in the Replay section are also fixed. Nice.

I used DOSBox to get it working. It works perfectly, including sound and SVGA.

I've seen that version before, I was an early bootleg version that was released at approx. the same time as the origional retail version.

Glad they decided to smoothe the bootleg over. Christ, why make a player start with a Heavy when you can't manufacture one on that level?
