the junk yard

Post by wanzer » 2017-12-16, 02:01

hello

where to start..
I loved the original Z, the strategy, its light and comical approach on destruction, the cut scenes.
so I was thrilled to see steel soldiers hit the shelves.. it featured 3D!!!
but I lost interest not long after playing it. to me it just did not feel like Z.
ofc the game was good in its own right.
now years later I am diving into blender... "its a free 3D studio" and I decided to try and make my own interpretation of the 2D sprites and some spinoffs used in the original Z and trying to keep the amount of anchor points that define the shape of the model as low as possible

I don't know if it was done on purpose
but when I started to model the light tank I noticed it was angular .. compared to the medium tank that felt rounded
that combined with the looks of the heavy tank and it looks somewhat resembling our timeline
the german angular tanks
the Russian round turret tanks
and the modern American heavy tank

on that I made some of my own spinoffs
the german brummbar
and the Russian T62 or one of its earlier models

Man, that is awesome!

I've been imagining a 3D remake of Z, maybe with combined ideas from Steel Soldiers, but the gameplay style retained similar to the original. I've been trying to match real world counterparts for Z vehicles, and also thought that the Medium could be modeled after Russian tanks, although I finally chose the American M60 Patton.

I see
or the patton m48

I might try to add a combo like that later on
I stumble allot of esher effects in the 2D version
so it can never be a 100% accurate model
I make more of them when I'm trying to model them in 3D so ppl can later on pick witch one they like most

a sketch of the heavy tank
and I made a discovery
it seems the heavy tank kept its distinctive gun mantlet in steel soldiers
I discovered this after I made this sketch and browsed in the snaps taken from steel soldiers

as for the gameplay

I was thinking of chopping it up into peace's
with first a remake of the original game containing all the aspects ranging from the fort, the factories, the units and the vehicles down to the boxes filled with grenades
but people will be losing interest pretty fast if playing the game does not yield rewards on the long run.

so..
. the main game (big encounters)
doing these gives progress, scraps and funds.

. one or a few story lines (small close up encounters)
doing these gives new patterns to items or items that can be reverse engineered.

. a home base
a place to setup operations, factories, .. junk yards :P, research buildings all to create consumable or lasting effects, weapons, vehicles to sell or use

. a auction house
the place where you can sell your stolen, created goods.

so far

Nice work man would love to see a new Z game sounds awesome :o for some ideas
its always fun getting new units as you progress threw the game just like the original Z did but more would be better.
some new robots generals Brad and Allan with special abilities kinda like the snipers were smarter then the other robots and even Commander Zod himself :D
promotions for units.
New planets to visit.

I figured ill need a map editor sooner or later
also for laying paths and tweeking technical map details .. you know, where can robots walk, where can tanks drive or not
so I scrapped together a tile painter
later on ill add more stuff

That looks handy. Could you actually make a game out of it? Any more progress done?

yes
the development tool I'm using supports
3d graphics
including
keyframe animations made in blender
dx9 shaders << but for the sake of keeping it tunie ill be avoiding them

class based programming

it can do net support
but im not very familiaur with p2p conections
so multi player is a bit far away atm

but i can make a auctionhouse based upon http protocol

1 core processing

once i bake a executable
im having my fingers crossed that the company that made steel soldiers
might want to consider a new Z

about the progress
I had some issues with the development tool crashing whenever a 3D instance was called
in the end I had to re install windows and everything else including the tool
that whole thing took a bit of speed out of the project

I did do some work on the heavy tank model
actually I made a 2e version

I noticed something I haven't really paid attention to before.

In the original Z PC version, vehicles actually had a unique camo colour scheme for each planet.
Image
Desert - Olive
Volcanic - Dark green
Arctic - Silver
Jungle - Green
City - Gray

I wish Zod Engine had that feature, as right now the vehicles only have a dull gray colour scheme.
