Ok, I see where the problem was. I was trying to start patch outside game directory in the same way as patch 1.6.5. After changing patch location into game directory and now works fine. Thanks Antares for suggestion. Maybe message "Not a correctly installed game or a patch is not running in the directory game" would be better in this situation?

@Antares

First - thanks this launcher.
Can you think about windowed mode with doubled resolution? 1280x960 instead of 640x480? full screen on panorama looks awful, windowed version on 26" is bit too tiny.
Thanks in advance :)

The menus in my expansion pack are in German. Is it supposed to be? Is mine out of date? I've learned my way around them for the most part but I'd like to know what some of my options are that I can change. Also, I don't get any videos any more. Just skips to the gameplay. Wud up wit dat?

In the game menus coordinates are hardwired for VGA and SVGA modes. Because of that it requires a good piece of work...

@meeky:

Thanks for a response. Bad news... pixel art looks a lot worser resized and with different aspect ratio. But at least - I can play without installing win 95 :)

Do you mean it looks awful in fullscreen? Why you can not just lower display resolution and run the game in windowed mode? Even if the game was enable to support 1280x960 mode it wouldn't make things on the screen bigger in the windowed mode.

Ok, guys, after a bit of hard work here is first beta which allows to switch video modes. It does not complete yet and lacks gloss, but at least you can try it and tell me what still need to be done. Please report any bugs you encounter.
New command line parameters:
/XGA - enables 1024x768 video mode
/SVGA - enables 800x600 video mode
This modes are supported in fullscreen and windowed modes.
To see all available switches run the mod with /?

For example, to run the mod in window 1024x768 you should:
  • Extract the RAR-archive into game folder (by default C:\Program Files\Bitmap Brothers\Z)
  • Write in command line: WinZMod /w3d /xga
Image

P.S. Just a few tips on how to enter command line parameters. There are plenty of ways of doing it, for example, you could use:
1) Some file commanders such as "FAR manager" or the command prompt (Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt)
2) Windows Run line. See explanations here.
Providing the game installed in its default directory, type in the run line:
"C:\Program Files\Bitmap Brothers\Z\WinZMod.exe" /w3d /xga
3) Shortcut. Go to the game folder. Create a shortcut for WinZMod executable. To add command line parameters to it follow this steps:
Right click the file and select Properties.
Under the shortcut tab, you will see an area that says Target, this will list the exact location of the file within quotation marks.
Modify the Target adding the command line variables after the last quotation mark.
Press apply and start your game via the shortcut.
Here is an example of a shortcut target for WinZMod with a command line parameter added to:
"C:\Program Files\Bitmap Brothers\Z\WinZMod.exe" /w3d /xga

Updated my previous post:
  • Eliminated Access Violation error, when Midi-music was enabled.
  • Fixed Bitmap Brothers' bug which did not allow to nativgate to player's fort on pressing ENTER key.
  • Info labels on top of the screen (e.g. Robot manufactured) are now centered
  • Fixed fort positioning on the game load
Work on enabling screen resolution change comes to an end and now it's time to take advice on future plans for the WinZ Mod. I loved the idea I read about in the russian forum: add an option to choose on which side to play. Side here means the side of the map. In this way one can replay all the maps in a new start position and look at already familiar levels in a new way. We do you make of it?

Hi and first Thanks for all your great stuff for this amazing game :)
I am on win XP sp3.

Bad new sorry ! I try this :
- Copy all the file from an iso to a directory (F:\Jeux\Z)
- Install Z Expansion (1.6.5) (I did not find 1.7 beta 3 version, I just got the sources :(
(Now with Z expasion i can launch the game and it seems to work...)
- Extract your two files in the directory F:\Jeux\Z
launch Run->Execute... and type :
F:
cd Jeux
cd Z
WinZMod /xga (for 1024x768 screen) i just get a black screen !
If i add the option /w3d the windows is small (not 1024x768 at all) and when i run the game the scren get larger :)
but the window is closed after a while !!!!! :'(

Any ideas ?

Hi, Astyan!
When you run the WinZMod.exe, the main window mode indeed is not changed yet, so the initial screen's resolution (that with a spacecraft) is 640x480. But when you select the level to run, resolution changes and game runs as in the screenshot in the post above.

To spot the problem we can try several things:
  • Download Antares patch version 1.7 beta 3 and verify that it runs.
  • Run the Mod in debug mode with this command line: WinZMod /xga /w3d /dbg. You will notice, that apart from game itself, there is also console window appears. Copy its output and post it here.
  • Try to run WinZMod in SVGA mode (/svga switch)

Astyan, how do you start the game - through "Game -> Start Game" or "Game -> Replay Level"?
When writing the mod I never used "Start Game" option and for that reason have not noticed the bug. So for now, use "Replay level" only.
