ZeXP in Linux

Post by jabu2oz » 2008-12-28, 15:48

Has anyone seen it possible to run ZeXP in Linux using Wine? The setup screen runs fine, but launching the game produces some nasty run-time errors.

It looks as though there has been some success in getting the original Z95 build to run: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=7347

But I'd like to take advantage the improvements used in this patch (namely TCP/IP multiplayer) using Linux. I'm running Z Dos fine in DosBox, but I'd prefer to get the most out of this classic game with ZeXP.

Hello and a happy new year.

I tried to run Z95 under Wine 1.1.11, the currently most recent version. To install it I mounted an image of the Z95 CD as a drive in winecfg and used the Z Expansion Patch 1.6. The installation works successfully but the game does not. The patched "zxp.exe" does not start at all, it causes an unhandled page fault. The original "winz.exe" starts but it won't recognize the CD, not worth getting to run at all.

We have to wait and see if the upcoming version 1.7 of the ZXP Patch will run without trouble. The beta does not work, right now.

Try to run the old version 1.5. She was made a little differently than modern versions. If the old version will work, let us know. Unfortunately, I can not install Ubuntu 8.10, that would verify it himself, he did not install on my computer for unknown reasons.

I've had a look on your forum thread (http://imasters.org.ru/viewtopic.php?id=20) for version 1.5, but can only find the download link for 1.6. Does anyone have 1.5 so I can test it in Linux?

Thanks Antares.

So with ZeXP 1.5 the game begins to load (the first intro movies are played) and it gets to the menu screen. The main image is black, but I can see the (Windows API) menus along the top. When I start the game, the loading screen briefly appears and then returns to black. No sound is played throughout.

Here is the Wine debug log created. ("Fixme:" messages are generally harmless).

Here's a screen shot (of it running in a window -- tested in full-screen as well):

Tested on Wine 1.0.1 and 1.1.11 (AMD64)

Hmm .. it is interesting. But I can better understand the problem, if I would be Ubuntu. I see what can be done.

Antares,

What does your screenshot show? Have you tried to boot the Ubuntu CD or did this message appear after trying to boot Ubuntu after a successful installation. I am asking because the that screenshot says the filesystem it found was NTFS, which is unusual for Linux based operating systems.

If you don't want to touch your running system, you should be able to install Ubuntu in a virtual machine. e.g. http://www.virtualbox.org/.

Starting with Ubuntu 8.04, it appears support for NTFS, and can be installed from Windows. The version 8.10 is not stable, as you saw I was not able to install it. But 8.04 was installed without any problems.

I have yet to start the game just before the main window, and then the game crash. This game is not necessarily a problem, it is possible that the WINE does not support what is API functions.
