how do I extract Graphics?

Postby L3g0mAn » 2006-03-28, 00:14

hello, everyone!

I'm sure many of you asked yourself (and others) this question - how can I get my hands on the in-game graphics in Z. I was planning to extract bitmaps of tanks or buildngs or maybe even environment tilesets and try to make my own. so, does anyone know how to do that? either in Z or Z95?

thanks in advance

I dont think this is possible without the development tools as most files are in a special file-format and not simple bmp-files...

I captured screenshots in DOSBox, and used them to obtain most of the tank sprites (my avatar is part of a screenshot as well), but I can't see a way to extract them...

All things you want are in PAC-files. PAC-file keeps all LBM(IFF)-files. IFF is a expandable container format. It can keep graphics, simple video (sprites), sounds, etc. There are a lot of LBM-readers in inet but they read only simple LBMs not complex.
PAC-files have a bug with length of files. For example: in PAC-header file length is 1024 but in internal IFF-header the length is 1000 or vice versa. It looks like files must be chunked but Z works fine with them.

does that mean the between-missions-videos are in there as well? I'd like to get my hands on those...

I don’t know. If I find IFF-file reader which understands IFF-PBM-HDP then I can say it.
The software for IFF creation be used by Z developers is "GWS/Wi?ndows 1.?1k". I donno this software

Parlamenter, I think you might be talking about this one:

http://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/gws.html

i think it says somewhere in the description of this software that it can make .iff files.

but as far as extracting graphics, I guess you're right. We will not know exactly until the game comes out open-source. which I don't think it will

I wrote IFF-PBM not IFF-ILBM.
And there is IFF-PBM-HDP extended format in PAC.
Graphic Workshop Professional cannot read it.

I know of a pak file unpacker, so you can see all the files in it... But as to what the URL is, I have no idea.
I'm afraid the server z game 2 is full. However, I have set up two more:-

For Z95 players ONLY!!!, use:
Name: Z95!
Password: Tom
For DOSBox-Z players ONLY!!!, use:
Name: DOSBox-Z!
Password: Tom
Have fun!

No, it was more of a universal file, I think.

I think it is for Quake "*.pak" files.
PAC-file is different and crypted (scratched) somehow.

Hi all,

I read about this tool here and that it is supposed to be able to handle .PAC files. I haven't tried it though. You may wanna give it a hot:

No. It's only BB thing by JMP.
The "pac" is only extension to a filename.

well, seems unlikely to me but are there any news to this topic? with the pac-unpacker from this sites' dl area i got all the pacs but the z.pac, which is the most important one :/
on this page i see many ingame-images from the game, are there any collections i can download? i read some of you did extract some sprites out of screenshots, sounds quite annoying. do you present them anywhere to download?
