Abandonware?

Postby Eastwind » 2005-06-24, 22:27

Hello , i m a fan of Z95 and i played it from my young time from now .
and continue to play . My little brother like it too :)
Isn't that Zed become an abandonware ? Because i think it s will be really cool
if Bitmap Brother (or Virgin ? ) will be let it in Open Source .
Because
1 . Z95 cannot run under other environnement than windows 95 , 98 , me
I want to play a party with my friend but win xp doenst run it .
I want to play it under my GNU / Linux system

2 . Because it will be cool if it can be add some new stuff .
like Copter or something other . Like a lot of other game now can be add some hack or mod .

3 . It will be legally free

4. Fan community and open source programmer will join and improve it .

More people will discover and share Zed Fun

Can we find a way for free the source of zed ?
i know in some case open source community join support and
get enough money for buy the right of source code of some program .
like with blender : they get 100,000 EUR in 7 short week and can buy blender and realease it to open licence otherwise Blender will be wasted

See history of blender
http://www.blender3d.com/cms/History.53.0.html

What do you think about all of this .

Congretulation for your website :)

Maybe it's an idea to start a petition, for releasing source or making the game compatible for win 2k,xp etc.?

Yes that s quite cool idea . Source is not only for compatible in all system but also for add some new stuff like music or new vehicule ,
Some music of Demoscene will be very interesting effect .
the second it s Z fan base will be bigger and open source community will participate actively ( it s where there is very good programmer )
How can we start petition ?

I know a year or two ago a couple of Abandonware sites put Z up for download, and Bitmap Brothers stopped them - even though Z was no longer selling anywhere. Its seems to be Bitmap Brothers petty mentality on the subject of Z - they wont patch it to XP levels, and wont allow anyone else to work on it open source. Hell - I'd happily PAY for a fix to Z so it can work on XP. But they refuse to make any effort, and wont allow anyone else to fix it.

If that isnt petulant spite, what is ?

I would really like to know if they are working on a sequel, or patch or something, and how far the progress is.

They also don't respond on e-mails :x and the site isn't updated.

They can stop sites from making Z available for download but cannot give any information to the fans.

Maybe they are pissed cause we didn't like z2 so much :P .

Maybe we have to make a petition and send it to the bros, any ideas? :)

I'd be happy to sign, but knowing B.B.'s track record on Z even if we got a million, including Blair and Bush's signatures, they'd ignore it !

yes it truly is ridiculous that Z has to remain untouched for so long now. id be all for a trip to the bros. and prove to em why Z should be updated, one way or another.

I think the BBs are pretty much dead, so I wouldn't expect to hear from them, let alone get your hands on a source code. Some talented programmers and artists should build a Z-like game from scratch: Same graphics-style, same principle, same humour and setting. It would look alike, but maybe in simple 3d or something. That'd be cool....
